This site aims to be usable by as many people as possible, including anyone using a screen reader, keyboard navigation, magnification, or reduced-motion settings.
What we are aiming for
The target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. To be straightforward about it: the site has been built with those guidelines in mind but has not yet been formally audited against them, so this is a statement of intent and of known position rather than a claim of full conformance.
What has been done
- Motion is reduced or removed for anyone whose device requests it, including the image fades, the journal sorting and the expanding panels
- Text is set at 18px with generous line spacing, and the layout reflows without horizontal scrolling down to 360px wide
- Expanding panels and sort controls can be operated by keyboard and announce their state to assistive technology
- Decorative images are marked as decorative so screen readers pass over them rather than reading filenames
- Colour is never the only way information is conveyed
- The two background videos on the home page are silent and decorative, and are hidden from screen readers
Known limitations
These are the areas we know fall short, listed so you are not left to discover them:
- The background videos on the home page play automatically and loop continuously, and there is no way to pause or stop them. They are silent, so there is nothing said that you could miss. They also do not respond to a reduced motion setting: if you have asked your device for less movement, this site does not honour that for these two videos. This is a known failure of WCAG 2.2.2 (Pause, Stop, Hide)
- The site has not been tested with every combination of screen reader and browser
